New to GPL: the Criterion Collection

Gretna Public Library is thrilled to announce a new collection within our DVD selection: a Criterion collection!

But what exactly is Criterion, and why is it an exciting addition? We’ll let Criterion.com answer the “what” question, and maybe a bit of the “why:”

The Criterion Collection is a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films on home video. Our editions often include restored film transfers along with commentary tracks and other kinds of supplemental features, which we pioneered with the release of our first laserdiscs, Citizen Kane and King Kong, in 1984. Ever since, Criterion has been working closely with filmmakers and scholars to ensure that each film is presented as its maker would want it seen and published in an edition that will deepen the viewer’s understanding and appreciation of the art of cinema.

With the beautiful work Criterion does with the films it handles, the cost of Criterion movies are higher than the average DVD. This can limit the films’ reach. By providing our community with a variety of films, anyone can discover something wonderful and new, or even an endearing classic, without it being a budget-buster.

From genre to the countries of origin, GPL tried its best to give the Gretna community a wide variety to choose from. Furthermore, there are currently 56 Criterion films on Kanopy, GPL’s streaming service of choice.

With over 1,000 Criterion editions available (and growing), there are films not yet added to GPL’s collection. If you’re interested in the library carrying a particular film, then you can fill out a suggestion form below. A librarian will look into it, and if it meets GPL’s collection criteria, then it will be added.
